What is HIPAA? HIPPA is the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The purpose of HIPAA is to protect the confidentially and security of healthcare information, help the healthcare field control administrative costs, and make it easier for people to keep health insurance. HIPAA is divided into two sections. The two main sections of HIPAA are Title I which deals with portability and Title II deals with administrative simplification. The portability section of HIPAA allows individuals to carry health insurance from one employer to another so patients don’t have a lapse in coverage. This section also restricts health plans from requiring pre-existing conditions on individuals who switch from one health plan to another. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) added the Privacy Rule to implement the requirement of HIPAA. The Privacy Rule focuses on the use and disclosures of an individual’s health information which is known as protected health information. The major goal of the Privacy Rule is to make sure the individual’s health information is properly protected while allowing transactions of health information needed to provide …show more content…
As technology expands provides are using clinical applications such as computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems, radiology, pharmacy, and laboratory systems. Even though this means health field is becoming more efficient and mobile the rise of technology use increases the potential security risks. The Security Role is designed to be flexible so a covered entity can implement new procedures, policies, and technologies. The Administrative Safeguards provisions in the Security Role require covered entities to preform risk analysis as a part of their security management
