HERO Personal Statement

Personal Statement One of the most defining achievements that I have accomplished in my twenty-two years is defying all obstacles that face a child of a low-income, teenage mother. At sixteen years old, my mother took the reigns of motherhood without hesitation despite my biological father leaving the picture. We grew up together. We made it through her abusive second husband, an ongoing legal battle surrounding child support, and the recent capstone of my coming out in our very conservative state. The insults from high school teachers who taught us both were no match for my mom’s encouragement and my academic determination. My mother’s journey through adulthood and my own journey to adulthood has left me with a skill that very few people can claim -- true empathy for those in broken homes. Working for UGA HEROs, an organization that raises money to send children who are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS from poor Atlanta neighborhoods to summer camps, I have been able to connect with children on a certain level. This allowed me to discover my strength and a defining characteristic of my morals in putting these children’s futures before all else. HEROs philanthropists serve by fundraising and spending time with their kids either by spending time at the larger kid events or …show more content…
I have seen these children grow over my four years at the University of Georgia. HEROs’ impact on their children have led to higher GPAs and an increased rate of college attendance in their neighborhoods. Next fall, I intend to use my experiences, passions and strong academic record to immerse myself in law school in the fullest. I have seen first-hand the extremely significant and immediate effect that advocating for children can have in the course of a person’s life, and I am eager to be a positive factor in that

Informative Essay Elizabeth Svoboda, the author of “What Makes a Hero” created a book that will help individuals with identifying and understanding what a hero is with many perspectives and experiences. Throughout the book, Svoboda clarified what a hero was within each chapter and shown how people find out what they can do to help others or in other words be a hero. The book illustrated rhetorical appeals within Chapter five, which is titled “suffering and Heroism”; Svoboda put to use pathos, ethos and logos because she described the story of Jodee Blanco of how her emotions and feelings from being abused and not socially accepted throughout high school to becoming socially accepted and a hero as an adult. People can connect with pathos appeal…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

Prompt #1 Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations. The world I've learned to know is the life in City Heights, though this is not the world I came from. The world I came from compared to the world I have now is a tremendous change. As people think about City Heights, they think about the good things, whether it's the beaches, the diversity, or the beautiful weather. Although if you think about the world my family was raised in, Southern Sudan, the only thing that comes to mind is the war that has been continuing for decades, the death of innocent people, and the hunger and thirst seen throughout the country.…

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…

Some positive change that I dream of making include increasing the wellbeing of underprivileged children, families, and veterans by doing everything I can to provide them with anything they need. I also wish to change the veterinary medicine industry by discovering new techniques and methods in order to further benefit and relieve the animals and their owners that are involved. Ever since my sophomore year in high school, I have volunteered with a multitude of organizations that strive to aid those who are less fortunate than others. In regards to underprivileged families and children, I have worked with local organizations such as Backpack Beginnings, Pathways Center, and YWCA Family Shelter. Backpack Beginnings packs lunch boxes and school supplies in backpacks for students who don’t always have a lunch or have all of their school supplies needed for their classes.…

Twelve ounces of bright orange frosting, along with unidentifiable cupcake ingredients, covered nearly every inch of my white skirt. Because an obscure sentence about frosting does not make much sense, I’ll explain. The campers at The Special Children’s Center, a camp for special needs children, were decorating cupcakes with what else but colored frosting, which proved to be an exciting, but supremely messy, idea. Immediately after beginning, an adorable little girl with Down syndrome came up to me with a massive, but mischievous, smile on her face and gave me the biggest hug I’ve ever received. Naturally, I was covered from head to toe in textures I would prefer never to encounter.…
