An HBCU is any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose sole principal mission was, and still is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary of Education. Southern University is a system and it is the only HBCU system with 5 different systems. The first system is what everyone knows as the original Southern University, that's located in Baton Rouge, and it is a 4-year university. The second system is actually the Southern University located in New Orleans Louisiana. The third system is Southern University located in Shreveport and this one is a 2-year college. The mission of Family and consumer science is to provide leadership and support for professionals whose work assists individuals, families, and communities in making informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life (Kato, 2008). The Body of Knowledge is what Family and Consumer Science live by. When it comes to the body of knowledge of family and consumer science professionals there are certain characteristics they all possess. First and foremost, they are committed to the child and the environment that sounds them. Secondly, they all pay heavy attention to past strengths and advantages, but do so while orienting the future. They do this because a main priority of all family consumer science professionals is to research enough to improve the daily lives of the people throughout the United States. By integrating professional specializations around the needs and issues that surround individuals, families, and the community as a whole this in turn leads to a diversity of people coming together.
