HBCU Personal Statement

Improved Essays
The sciences have been central to my life ever since I was a child. My mother is a veterinarian and my father a mechanical engineer. Both of my parents attended Tuskegee University and always pushed for me to consider HBCU’s for my education. STEM careers and education are promoted heavily in Huntsville, my hometown, as major tech companies and government entities such as NASA and Missile Defense are located there.
I ventured out my senior year and took courses dealing with social sciences, both in my high school and at a nearby university. I learned more about the world I lived in and myself as black person and the systems that affect me. This was a period of major growth and self-realization. This prompted me to enter into Howard as sociology

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

Howard University guarantees their students a very well-rounded education, while still letting them dive into the beauty of their majors. As a Howard student, I will be able to reach my full potential intellectually and socially and strive for success in my intended field of study, Political Science. I’ve been interested in political science for a long time and what intrigued me the most was that I would be learning more about other countries and focusing on their cultures, belief systems, and stances on various international issues and crises. As well as an in-depth look at domestic politics and this country’s government, which goes perfectly with Howard’s convenient location in Washington, D.C. the home of Capitol Hill, The White House, and 177 foreign embassies.…

Although I have been an MU Tiger fan for years, my passion for Mizzou truly began when I attended the High School Mini Medical School for a week last summer. Living in the dorms, receiving hands-on training in several medical situations, as well as just getting a glimpse of what student life is like at MU was amazing. The beautiful campus, welcoming atmosphere, and everything that I learned regarding Mizzou while staying there only served to increase my desire to attend. The university offers me everything I am looking for in a college and more: an impressive nursing program, a large and diverse population of students, a phenomenal recreation center, and NCAA athletics to be involved in and excited about! Being from Kansas City, I also love…

I am a good friend of the Trossman family, but I am also a nursing student in my final year hoping to get a job as an RN in The Hospital for Sick Children (HSC) after I graduate. Over the past ten years I have formed strong relationships with families of children who require constant and complex medical care. Jacob Trossman and Taylor, Cole and Brody Florence are just the few I can name with permission. Prior to nursing school, the parents taught me the skills and knowledge needed to perform each child's needs in order to maintain safety as a priority during our outings. I was able to take them to the park, Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) and even sleepovers at my house without their parents being constantly worried how their children would manage without them nearby.…

As I reflect on Bobbitt’s (2013) selection in The Curriculum Studies Reader, there are similarities to curriculum policies and procedures at OCTC, but there is also an omission of the human experience (Bobbitt) that is affecting retention of first-year STEM students. In Scientific Method in Curriculum-Making by Franklin Bobbitt, he provides an example of developing curriculum for vocational education, and this example mirrors the creation and continuation of programs of study at OCTC. According to Bobbitt, educators “set out to discover the major occupations” (p. 15) in the area, and this is the basis for STEM programs of study at OCTC. There must be available jobs in the State to justify implementing a program of study at OCTC (SC Technical…
