H. Pylori Disinfection: A Case Study

For the planning and implementation of an effective intervention program, at first, it is necessary to do a needs assessment. Therefore, secondary data on the incidence and prevalence of H. pylori, behavioral risk factors that are known to contribute to or cause the infection has been collected. It is evident that, in the United States incidence and prevalence of H. pylori is more common among adults than children (Khalifa, Sharaf, & Aziz, 2010). To obtain primary data, a survey has been done with a questionnaire based on PRECEDE-PROCEED model in Baltimore County. The behavioral assessment included the practice of fruit and vegetable disinfection, cooking behavior and hand washing practice. The predisposing factors assessment included assessing the knowledge, attitude, beliefs regarding H. pylori infection and chronic gastritis, and importance of safe cooking behavior. It is evident that general knowledge about H. pylori is poor and only a small number of people knows it can be transmitted by unsafe food, water and poor personal hygiene (Driscoll, Brown, Harris, & Oren, 2017). There is also lack of knowledge about the association of gastric cancer and H. pylori, and many people think they are not at risk of acquiring H. pylori infection (Driscoll et al., 2017). Moreover, there is limited knowledge about safe food handling and cooking among young adults (Abbot et al., 2009). The reinforcing factors assessment has found that family can be a source of influence on food safety behavior (Meysenburg, Albrecht, Litchfield, & Ritter-Gooder, 2014).
