In the case of Rana Plaza collapse, police officials put the death toll at 134, with more than 1,000 injured. H&M, and other clothing retailers, share a responsibility for allowing conditions amount to this. Of course not all brands’ merchandise were produced in the Rana Plaza, but multinational brands as a whole lose focus of factory safety in the search for the cheapest source of labor. The big Western brands place a price pressure on factories that undermines any possibility that factories will make the costly repairs to make these buildings safe. Moreover, the governments in underdeveloped countries are reluctant to take any actions that would increase costs or alienate foreign companies. Four stakeholders that contribute to the creation of a professionally responsible supply chain include multinational brands, countries’ governments, local manufacturers, and international organizations. Multinational brands can contribute by choosing to work with factories that will pay for independent inspections and blacklist those that do not. Governments can improve factory conditions and protect workers by imposing safety regulations on factories and maintaining a minimum wage. Furthermore, local manufacturers have a responsibility to treat its factory workers properly and ensure the soundness of their buildings if the government does not implement any regulations. Finally, international organizations, like the Clean Clothes Campaign and the International Labor Organization, place pressure on companies, manufacturers, and the government to the create a professionally responsible supply chain.
