Both women’s artistic and rhythmic gymnasts dedicate the majority of their time in the gym. They are each international sports governed by the Federation International of Gymnastics and participate in a standardized level system ranging on from level 1 to level 10. Artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics share the concept of perfection and scoring of the ten point system. Although they have many similarities, they also have many differences like the apparatuses, the use of competition and the style.

The ribbon is 6m long and probably the most popular event for spectators. The ribbon is use for large, smooth movement to make spirals and circles. The hoops used in rhythmic gymnastics is made up of plastic or wood and the individual/group rotates the hoop around their hands and body then adds rolls, swings, circles, figure eights, throws, passing through and over the hoop. Made up of rubber or synthetic material, the ball is about 18-20cm in diameter. It is used for throws, bouncing and rolls. Sort of like the ribbon, the rope is light and supple. However, the individual uses the rope to leap over or skip then add in swings, throws, circles, rotations and figure eights. The clubs the gymnasts use is made of wood or synthetic material, the clubs are for rhythmical tapping and the gymnast can add mills and small circles, asymmetric movements, throws and catches. Lastly, the free hand is commonly used for ones on lower levels which individuals are using no apparatus and just focusing on emphasizing on style, technique and execution of dance skill. Rhythmic gymnasts participating in groups can use one or more apparatuses in their routines. In general, rhythmic gymnasts focuses more on flexibility and coordination. Gymnasts participating in this sport are tall and skinny to show the beauty of flexibility and exaggerate the lining of their body.
