Moving to a new state, from the south to the east, was one of the largest changes in my life. Everyone would be different: my teachers, friends, and coaches. In fact, my parents' biggest worries were about gymnastics, as I never had difficulty making friends. They were mainly fretful about the coaches; after all, they would have the most impact on my attitude towards gymnastics. After arriving in Pennsylvania, we immediately searched for a gym. Fortunately, there were plenty not far from our residential area. Furthermore, we devoted the first few days to finding a suitable gym, and found two possible ones.
Approximately a week prior to the beginning of school, I had a few days to try out one particular gym, meeting my possible teammates and coaches. My skill level fit in fine with the others, and I made immediate, genuine friendships

This annoyed me: I really wanted to improve, and I swore to myself that I could deal with any criticism. However, at my new gym, things were different. As I began to spend more time with my new coaches, I began to realize they were much stricter than I had first expected. One day, on bars, one of the coaches blatantly criticized my skills. Having never experienced such straight-forward and harsh corrections before, I felt defeated and helpless. Improvement was difficult for me, and the criticism was only making me feel worse. However, I knew that I would have to get used to the corrections and that they were supposed to help me improve. After a few practices, I began to switch my mindset and came to each training session stronger than the last. I constantly convinced myself that the criticism would end up helping me improve, and I slowly began to notice changes in my performance. Instead of allowing the corrections to drag me down, I stored them in my mind, using each statement as fuel for my determination to

As cliche as it might sound, it is true. Often, your success as a gymnast is a measurement of how hard you have worked. I know I have trouble with being sure of myself and being confident in what I can do on the field. Although, I am a player that wants to be successful more than anything else in the world I am willing to go through anything and everything you can think of if it will make me a better athlete. When I read Coach Wooden’s book I realized you need poise and confidence in order to reach all the success you want and that really changed me, because I have that motivation and that drive to be successful in every way that I can. Also, poise and confidence weren’t just on the pyramid of success they were at the very top on the second row on this pyramid, so that just goes to show that confidence and poise are two things I really should work on as a person and as an athlete if I want to reach all the potential I know I can. Since I am motivated to be the best I can be, since I have that competitive fire to have all the potential in the world I read this book…

Being a gymnast was not only about making flips and turns it was something more than that. It came with its challenges, but it was something unforgettable. Having been a competitive gymnast for ten years not only showed me how to be a part of a team, but it showed me something greater which is work ethic. When I was in gymnastics I learned that you will have to work with people that you necessarily do not get along with. You sometimes will have to be a part of a team and you may not like someone in it.…

The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…

You have to cast into a hover position a go around the bar like that. When you get to the point where you’re in a upside down vertical position, you have to push with your elbows and shoulders to get to a cast position again.…

I grew up loving gymnastics, especially since my parents put me in gymnastics classes when I turned two. I love the feeling of stretching myself in unnatural ways and the rush I get when I show my friends a split, even in jeans. I adore the thrill and excitement of flying dangerously through the air, sometimes on a four inch piece of wood, and sometimes off of a bar eight feet in the air. I have never loved anything like I have gymnastics and I don’t think I ever will. My dream and number one goal in life is to go to college with gymnastics.…

Over the years growing up I have been able to meet many people from the gym that I would have never met otherwise. Through the years there have been quite a few people that have come and gone through the gym. Some did not know what to expect and did not like it or people who just didn't like putting in the time to really learn anything and improve. I have also had the opportunity to meet many different people from around the country and even the world from going to different seminars and training camps, none of which I would have been at unless I was involved at the gym.…
