Gym Observation Paper

Over the past few days I have been observing social behaviors in various gyms I have memberships in. Lifetime Fitness in Matthews, NC, Monroe Aquatic and Fitness Center in Monroe, NC, and Siskey YMCA in Matthews, NC. I observed the types of people I saw in the gym, what kind of clothes they were wearing, what kind of equipment they are using such as gloves, lifting straps, lifting belts, etc. Since I have been going to the gym for about two years, I am also able to tell approximately at what level many lifters are based on previous observations and experiences.

Over the past week, I have gone to all three gyms multiple times and the first thing I observed that all three gyms have primarily two age groups, the first being highschoolers, teenagers, and overall younger people. Some just starting out with weight lifting and also many experienced teenage body builders. The next group was older people ages 60 and up. Younger weight lifters usually stuck to using free weights and older people tended to use only cable and isolation machines, as well as machines for cardio. The

In my first gym and third gym, Lifetime Fitness and Siskey YMCA, I noticed that at least 30% of the people I walked by had the same headphones: Beats Powerbeats 3 Wireless headphones. Another popular headphone I noticed was regular Apple Earpods, the headphones that come standard with all iPhones. Secondly, I noticed that almost everyone in the gym was wearing sport clothes such as basketball shorts, joggers, tennis shoes, short sleeve shirts or tank tops, and sports bras for women. Almost no one was wearing regular pants, jackets, formal footwear, jewelry, or any formal clothes. The reasons for this is obvious, because sweating, and heavy gym equipment can damage or ruin clothes, as well as they are very uncomfortable when trying to be

Being a dramaturgical theorist studying gym behavior would give one many interesting subjects and possible things to study. By simply looking at the stereotypes associated with gym culture, you could see them as one huge performance. The best, and most widely known example of this “performance” would be the men from the show Jersey Shore. Ever since Jersey Shore had been popularized I personally, have seen a rise in “gym going.” Going to the gym to these men gives them a sense of prestige and dignity, otherwise known as Face.…

My life has been centered on sports for the majority of my life and it’s one of the things I’m most passionate about. When I grow up I imagine myself being a sports trainer or running my own gym for athletes to train in just like me. So for my may program I wanted to find an internship that could replicate this notion. From a friend’s recommendation I found first athlete, a sport’s training gym, to be the perfect fit and I knew it would teach me more about what goes on behind the scenes of training. I see myself as being a capable leader and I strive for success so the book I read throughout may program was “Be the First Believer”, by Ed Deutschlander, where he covers all the values a great leader should have and why successful business people and athletes are so successful.…

To begin a proper investigation into the actions and motives of a certain group of people, my partner and I carried our curiosity to the center of physical activity on East Campus: Brodie Gym. Reasoning to this idea is not truly known; however, it seemed to prove itself as an interesting experiment nonetheless. In a very conspicuous manner, we sat ourselves down on the sidewalk immediately in front of the main entrance. Upon careful study and diligent notetaking, we observed some social patterns which were consistent with most people, but some occurrences were completely random. It was a sunny day with great heat: this led to a decrease in the layers of clothing worn by most people.…

The sport of Crossfit is in the midst of sweeping the nation it what seems like the blink of an eye. In the span of a year, the Crossfit Games, an annual competition showcasing the best atheletes doing various competitive workouts in an effort of gaining the title of "Fittest on Earth" along with a hefty monetary prize, has been broadcasted on major television channels. It has been introduced to the working class and has people giving up their "cookie-cutter" gym member ships and going to join their first Crossfit class as soon as possible. The concept behind this intriguing new workout program is fascinatingly addictive; you get put in to a group with some of your peers, all with varying levels of fitness, and are challenged to complete a workout either within an allotted time limit, or for the fastest time they're capable of putting up. This program is great because it shows people that they can keep up with some of the more fit people and it takes away the "working out…

Although this may be a standard feature to most any gym, ASU goes far beyond a mere standard with the accommodations they provide their students who want to lift and stay in shape. When you enter the gym on the first level you immediately see a variety of racked weights and benches to use, along with other machines that if open, are available to all students. As you continue to walk down the first level of the facility you will see another gym. This was part of the extension Arizona State provided the SDFC in 2013 (Tempe Facilities). This gym is filled with all of the latest lifting technology and plenty of space is provided for other physical activity such as yoga or circuit training which are both important to the complex.…

The environment was unlike how I believe most people think it is. Many people think gyms are unfriendly with everyone keeping to themselves and not wanting to help anyone else. When attempting to answer my central research question “why do women and men choose different workouts (i.e. cardio compared to weight lifting) at the gym”, it is important to understand and analyze what exactly I am researching. In this research I will be analyzing the behaviors and motivations of a particular sub group, i.e. men and women. With the emphasis being on the particular activities that certain genders partake in. With that being said, I would have to come up with a strategic plan that incorporates the exploration of the topic through the view of both genders involved. I intend to collect qualitative data through a multitude of various data collection techniques such as observations, interview questions and participant observations strategies…

My visits to the gym gave me a lot of insight as to how space in the gym can be gendered and how this may be a result of the social construction of gender. In the gym, my observations indicated that weight-lifting equipment and free weights were used more so by men than women. In the instances that I visited, I only saw one woman utilizing weights. This may be due to the mere aggressiveness and masculinity that is associated with lifting weights, and by a woman engaging in these acts, she may be seen as transgressing gender norms. Furthermore, a woman engaging in weightlifting activities may be seen as lesbian or transgressing heteronormative standards.…

In the locker room are Dan and Jason. I say hello and continue on to my locker. More people come in and everyone starts talking about how bad their day was. It's almost a daily contest to see who can have bragging rights for having the worst day, perhaps they want sympathy or maybe they just like to complain a lot. I find it humorous that a bunch of guys who come in every day to train and beat on each other can complain so much, so I laugh at them and leave the locker room.…
