Loss may damage one person or bring him nirvana. People have their decisions of their life which show various results. The way people treat the relationship between the environments and themselves foreshadows their ends. Being a profound topic, many authors put theme of loss in their story recipes. In “Gwilan’s Harp” written by Ursula K. LeGuin, “The Washwoman” by Isaac Singer, and “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry, the main characters all experience different extent of loss. The authors reveal to audiences those characters’ decisions of life after meeting great loss and the ends they received.

In LeGuin’s short story “Gwilan’s Harp,” as a talent harp player, Gwilan received an old valuable harp from her mother after her mother died. The loss of mother did not strike her down, but the treasured harp accompanied her as the role of mother in music-days, festivals, and funerals. Happiness did not prolong, a big turn in Gwilan’s life appeared after her precious harp damaged in an accident. This old washwoman was abandoned by her son who viewed his mother ashamed. Losing of the love from son, the old washwoman lived a harsh life. She had to walk more than one hour to get laundry and washed them by hands even in winter. On her son’s wedding day, her son did not invite her so she peeked outside the church door. Living alone, her life nearly took away by death in a terrible snowy winter without anyone known.
