Gwendolyn Brooks, a female black author. She had written many poems, but to everyone there is one that sticks out the most. “We Real Cool.” She wishes that wasn 't the only poem that she is well-known for but that will do for her. Her poem is very short yet it is good enough to set an image and makes someone think about what era this was at and how it can trigger something.…
She is also remembered through people she has influenced since her death. Her style of writing can be seen in their writing or even the types of themes she used are projected onto the young and aspiring poets. For example great authors such as Ford Maddox Ford, Virginia Woolf, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Elizabeth Jennings and Phillip Larkin all took note from her work and were though roughly inspired. Even though her death may have risen her popularity, she still didn’t reach the standard of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In the early 20th century her work became even less notable as modernism was on the rise.…
The slave codes denied slaves the privilege to learn how to read or write, but this was not the life for Phillis Wheatley. She was bought and educated by the Wheatley family and managed to become the first published female African American poet. Although she died impoverished, she was still successful in terms of making an impact on the generations after her. Despite being an African woman in America, she earned her success through her intelligence, hard work and dedication, and her acceptance in the white community.…

Billy Collins and the Art of Blogging Several years ago, when I studied writing in college, I attended a poetry reading featuring Billy Collins. After the event, held in the auditorium of a local community college, the emcee announced Collins would be signing autographs in the college library. Sitting near the stage by the back door, as most people turned to exit the main doors, I left through the back door. I think I was one of the first 20 people in line, and I had my copy of The Art of Drowning ready for the famed Billy Collins to sign.…
Excellent, response to the discussion. I do agree with you about the boys getting a kick out of skipping school. My interpretations cause me to lean toward mischievous, rather than rebellious, since they were in a pool hall and not driving drunk or fighting. The audio version of the poem was outstanding and how she emphasized the word “WE,” which captured each line about being cool after dropping out of school. What caused Gwendolyn Brooks to peer inside the pool hall?…

A poem’s writer is someone who writes from individual experiences, while a speaker is a fictional character created to express feelings and ideas throughout the poem. The writer creates the speaker to tell the readers the story. Sometimes, they can be real people in the writer’s life, historical events, or just fictional characters. The “I” may not be the author, but it could be the speaker in the story. The poet uses the speaker to act as a narrator to the poem and the reader might not know their names.…

In the poem “We Real Cool” written by the first African-American to win a Pulitzer for Poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks discusses how she came across a group of young men at a pool hall, and what she thought they were feeling. Gwendolyn Brooks does a great job of discussing the issues, which African Americans faced during the time of the poem’s publication in the 1950’s in Chicago. Brooks does so in a clear and concise way that engages the readers by using alliteration, rhyme, and monosyllabic words. So when reading the poem it flows easily, and has a catchy, chant like quality. By using a unique frame and structure for her poem, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote a very well written poem that delivered a clear message.…
