Gwendolyn Brooks
Gwendolyn Brooks was an extremely famous American Poet. She is particularly famous to be the first black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. (Gwendolyn Brooks.) Her poems usually covered political topics and related to the injustice faced by the black and underprivileged communities. Her work stand out to me because she expresses such profoundly important and critical issues in the simplest of manners that they can be understood by a young child. Although she uses complex sentence structure, her vocabulary remains understandable and the tone of her writing allows one to get a feel of the meaning if it isn't readily clear in the first place.
This shows that she gave it substantial importance that her poems would read and heard by children and she wanted them to understand her works of art. She made use of metaphors and analogies to make her meaning clear. Her poems, even though a critique on the situation of her context, never directly addressed the issue. It seems that she wanted to inspire children to be happy and proud of who they were. Belonging to the underprivileged community, at that time, of Black people, she wrote much to inspire black members of the society to be happy of who they are. Her poems resonated with empathy regarding members of her society.
In her very famous poem, "We Real Cool" (Robertricardoreese) she captures the feeling of children who have left school to enjoy themselves in their present. She claims the inspiration came to her when she saw young boys have fun in a swimming pool when they should have been in school. Although her poems were not something to promote such behavior in children, it did reassure the children that someone could understand their situation and desires. So in at one time children are the target of her poems and at the same time they are her
