In some families there are certain objects that are passed on from generation to generation. A three golden chained emerald necklace was the precious object passed on. In the Garth family, Celia’s parents had died and passed on an emerald necklace to Celia, which her father had given her mother when they got married. This necklace had been passed from generation to generation ever since the first Garths came over from England. The necklace has three parts that are important to the book Celia Garth by Gwen Bristow: the emerald shows the poison in Celia’s life, the color green displays toughness and masculinity, and the gold chains symbolize Celia being generous by giving the necklace over to Roy, her cousin, and the success of Roy getting the …show more content…
The color gold represents success and achievement (The Color Gold). Being as desperate as Roy was for the necklace, made him do despicable things. Roy had made Celia his maid to work around the house and threaten her that he would tear apart her room to look for this necklace if she did not give it to him. One evening he became angry with Celia because she was not handing the necklace over that he said, “’Celia, if you don’t bring that necklace here at once, I’m coming down to your room. I’ll tear your bed apart, empty every bureau drawer, shake out every garment you own, until I find it’” (Bristow 369). The problem with Roy’s anger against Celia was that Celia’s room had a secret passage way for Luke, her new husband, to come in and visit without anyone knowing because he would be in a lot of trouble or even killed if anyone saw him. Celia became scared and handed the necklace over because she did not want Roy to find out their secret. Another reason Celia gave them the necklace was because Sophie was throwing a fit and began to cry that she was not getting her way. Sophie acting this way made Celia feel angst and infuriated that she had given the necklace over. The gold chains that represent success and achievement helped Roy gain the possession of the necklace, however that did not last

It can mean love, youth, health, memories, sunsets, sunrises, flowers, a baby, someone who believes in only good things or tries to help people...anything that can make a person happy or feel good.
