Guy Montag's Transformation In Fahrenheit 451

Throughout life people go through different transitions and change as a person. New revelations and experiences can cause a person to change their moral views on a situation. Transformations like this one is what Guy Montag, the main character in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, went through. Guy Montag originally started off as someone who portrayed the image that he believed in society’s morals. Despite his apparent love for his job at the beginning of the novel Guy Montag was able to listen to his subconscious thoughts and was able to isolate himself from the societal norms. Ultimately Guy Montag transforms from someone who portrays an image of a person who believes in society's morals to an enlightened man with a newfound purpose. Due to …show more content…
Guy Montag’s outer appearance was that he believed in the society but he subconsciously realized that something was wrong. Before he began to transform he believed that he loved his job, “It was a pleasure to burn” (Bradbury 1). Through examining this quote its evident that Montag enjoyed his job, he seemed to like burning books and generally didn’t mind destroying peoples homes. This outer appearance is the one that Montag portrayed. Although he seemed to like his job and believed in the rules, he has been collecting books on the job “for the past year” (Bradbury 62), and doesn’t seem to know why. When Montag met Clarisse she made him realize that he was unhappy. The conversation with Clarisse was the first event that initiated his transformation. She made him more aware of his sub conscious thoughts and he acted upon them later in the novel. Clarisse made him aware of things that he normally would not have noticed like different aspects of nature, “and if you look- there’s a man in the moon” (Bradbury 7). Montag had never even thought to look at nature and Clarisse made him stop and think that theirs more to life than just his job. Clarisse took of his “mask and the girl had run across the lawn with it and there was no way of asking for it back” (Bradbury 9).
