In Montag`s civilization the law of books especially reading them is enforced like no other. The people living in this society already think that books are dangerous and are forbidden. At the beginning of the novel, Montag meets Clarrisse, he notices a difference between her and others, and she wonders about him too. Clarrisse proclaims to Montag “You`re not like the others. I`ve seen a few; I know. When I talk to you, you look at me. When I said something about the moon, you looked at the moon, last night. The others would never do that.” [Bradury-23] As he struggles to ensure no one finds the books he has collected and saved, he starts to realize the person he has become and the person he is. By the end of the novel when he meets the group who is waiting for the day reading books are available again, he finally notices his true self. In Equality`s society the community doesn’t allow knowledge, it believes everyone should be on the same level and on the same page. He feels everyone should have a chance to be an individual and he runs away to be one. Same as Montag, Equality also goes through a recreation of identify. At the beginning of the novel, Equality immediately demonstrates the way the community is, showing the struggle against him. He writes “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is a base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone”. (Rand-1) With this statement he acknowledges how everyone must be the same, you can`t be different, you can`t do anything different and this doesn’t appeal to Equality. When describing the society some key factors that indicate the novels dystopia are the government, the surveillance, and the feelings of being trapped. In all dystopian novels the government has a tremendous amount of power. Being that the government makes laws and customs that seem ideal and perfect in their mind. Citizens are under control surveillance. Which includes that information, and freedom are restricted. Montag and Equality have the feeling of being trapped in their society. They both see the fault in the government making laws that must be followed, they see that everything they want to do is restricted. Their society is an illusion of a perfect world. Eventually, Montag burned his house, burned Beatty, and was being chased as a fugitive.
