The main characters of the book where Guy Montag and Clarisse McClellan. Guy Montag is a 30 year old fireman whose job is burning books and the houses where they are illegally kept. Clarisse McClellan is a naive 17 year old girl. Clarisse is interested in parts of the world Montag doesn't understand, like watching people, looking at the moon, and smelling the leaves.

The problem in the novel is that technology is always getting in the way of life, such as TV and burning books. When Montag and the other firemen are called to burn a home they discover its Montag's.
