Into the Wild Questions In the first chapter of the book, the tone is very straightforward and unbiased. He says that he tried “to minimize his authorial presence.” As Krakauer begins the Into the Wild, he includes both positive and negative facts and comments about Chris McCandless by people who have met him during his journey. I don’t think that the author is very sympathetic towards Chris because he is so straightforward and doesn’t really show any emotion.…

Gender is a societal subject that has evolved and changed so many times throughout history. Over all, though, it is evident that men have always had a precedence over women from the very beginning. It took years for women to be able to vote, get jobs that were considered "a man's job", and even today there are still issues with men and women receiving equal pay. In Charles Portis's novel True Grit, a fourteen-year-old girl named Mattie steps up to the plate to find vengeance for her murdered father. The novel takes place in the late 1800's, so it is natural to assume that women would be discriminated against.…

Rango, directed by Gore Verbinski was released to theaters and became a commercial success earning $38,079,323 million dollars in just the opening weekend. Although this was Verbinski’s first animated film, it was awarded an Oscar in 2011 for best animated feature film. Many questioned if this film was meant for children and as he accepted his award he grinned and said, “It was certainly created by a bunch of grown-ups acting like children.” In most traditional western films, the plot usually includes a hero, villain, love interest, and townspeople. Although Rango is a contemporary western, Verbinski follows the western formula using typical aspects of traditional western films.…

I know that I have stated this in almost every reading response I have written, but I heavily dislike the fact the author insist on using a storytelling method to talk about his subjects, including unrelated anecdotal information. I can appreciate Rob Schreiber’s intense love for music, because me too, and I think it is great he started Pitchfork out of his basement, just doing what he loves. I can relate to Schreiber because I too am in love with music but also have to work a bunch of mundane jobs to get through school. I enjoy that it is a standard rags-to-riches story. In my experience, I think I would enjoy pursuing something like that: just trying to work in what I love, even if it takes a while.…

I can relate to Mark Watney’s character in “The Martian”. Watney, a botanist and engineer, is stranded on Mars after he is presumed dead by his teammates. I could relate to Watney’s strategy in solving problem after problem to survive. Planning and creativity were key as he developed a conducive atmosphere and grew potatoes to sustain himself. Similarly, in my research and engineering projects, I always aim to develop creative, efficient solutions using tools I have, like using an iPhone’s camera to measure eye-tracker latency.…

Another one of the films I found interested was the narrator’s number eight choice, Jason Schwartzman in Rushmore. Jason Schwartzman was phenomenal in this comedy. This film highlights his on screen personality and charisma. He commands the camera’s attention with his funny personality and charms. According to the book, acting is more than just reading your lines (Prince, 2013), you have to make the audiences feel connected to you and Jason did just that.…

Rahim Khan may just seem like a fatherly figure of the main character, Amir, in the novel, The Kite Runner; however, Rahim’s characteristics change significantly as time passes in the book and can clearly be seen in the passage. Hosseini makes us perceive Rahim Khan as an old, dying man just trying to give Hassan’s son, Sohrab, a better life than the one he currently is living. However, we also see Rahim as this faithful father-like figure in Amir’s life which adds to his complexity. Rahim Khan in this passage, seems to consistently present himself as this old, dying man.…
