Ever since Blakey Hooper was a young girl, she was known for her work ethic and abilities on the basketball court. School came naturally to her – she never had a hard time understanding the curriculum even when it was hard to understand for most kids her age. If you were to walk by the beach courts on any given night, you would find the girl with carmel colored skin, curly brown hair that resembled a lion's mane and vibrant green eyes that were as green as perfectly watered grass in the summer time. South Mission Beach Courts was a tranquil place for the number one prospect in the nation for girl’s basketball to train and get her mind off of things occurring in her life. One blistering night on the beach courts of San Diego, the fluorescent lights illuminating the unoccupied court's, Blakely Hooper shot unaffected by the world around her. I thought you were the number one prospect in the 2018 class, prove it by playing a normal guy like me.” Blakely set down her basketball by her bag and stated,

Blakely chuckled,

Dreams and Deception: Sports Lure, Racism, and Young Black Males’ Struggle in Sports and Education Dreams and Deception by Isabel Ann Dwornik, which was published on January 31, 2017. I chose this book because I felt that people should be more aware of how young black males view a career in sports as a way out of their financial situation. “Game Day” isn’t a regular day at Xavier University of Louisiana; it’s a day for Xavier’s Golden Nugget’s to defend their pride, while we cast our wide angel lens towards the basketball court, capturing the engulfing reflection pool in all of its pride. Athletics are a big part to most universities and students’ life. Either they love to participate or some love to go and cheer their peers and colleagues on. I learned this while working at a Xavier’s Women basketball game. I wanted to see my fellow students in a less stressed atmosphere, rather than a classroom. My interest was also peaked because I watched basketball games in high school…

Unfair Domination of Private Schools in Athletics Athletics are a big part of every school in the United States. From public schools who get the kids that live in that area to the private schools who are allowed to recruit students on scholarship, these competitions are not always fair. Coco Lovely, a senior on the varsity basketball team at Palo Alto High School, has experienced the unfairness of recruiting throughout her high school career. “They are able to get the best athletes from their area which makes them better than all the other public schools in the area,” Lovely said. “There were a few girls in the Class of 2018 who were supposed to come to Palo Alto and play basketball, but they were recruited by Pinewood, so they went there instead.”…

Basketball is deeply rooted in Japanese American history with leagues starting up as early as the 1930s. Basketball is more than a sport in the Japanese American community; it’s a way of life. After fourteen year of struggling for the rights to build the 35,000 square foot fifteen million dollar center, the Little Tokyo Service Center was approved to start developing the old parking structure. For the Japanese American community members, this development was as much of a push for recreational space as it was to protect Little Tokyo's cultural identity and economic stability because it was seen as the best way to invite the Japanese American youth community back into Little Tokyo. This new development builds community by organizing over 10,000 residents in leagues and tournaments.…

We all have that one person that motivates us to be successful. Me personally, throughout all of high school, one of my teammates, Kayla, constantly spoke about me behind my back. Consequently, I lost confidence and became intimidated and anxious, along with fearing the years I had left with her. However, I overcame this adversity by remembering the greater adversity that a high school basketball team in New Orleans, Louisiana faced and overcame.…
