Guy de Maupassant was born to wealthy parents. After they divorced, Maupassant lived with his mother who was domineering. His mother was the basis for the women in his stories who were overbearing. Maupassant published almost 300 short stories ((henri) (rene Albert) Guy De Maupassant). O. Henry created stories that were funny with an ironic twist and surprise endings. O. Henry eloped with Athol Estes who was the model for the character Della in his famous story “The Gift of the Magi”. To support his family he took a job as a teller at the First National Bank of Austin (O. Henry). Even though Della and Mathilde are both prideful, they differ in personality and in how they handle stressful situations. “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry are two well-known short stories. “The Necklace” is about Mathilde who borrows her friend’s diamond necklace, but loses it and buys another diamond necklace to replace it. Mathilde goes into debt for ten years trying to pay off the replacement necklace only to find that the original necklace was fake and did not cost that much (De Maupassant, Guy). “The Gift of the Magi” is about Della who is trying to buy her husband a present for Christmas but does not have enough money. She sells her most prized possession, her hair, for a chain for his watch. At the end, the husband sold his watch to buy Mathilde a comb set for her hair, which is now short (Henry, O).
