“As humanity perfects itself, man becomes degraded. When everything is reduced to the mere counter-balancing of economic interests, what room will there be for virtue? -Gustave Flaubert. In eighteenth century France the government and upper class were becoming irrational by keeping old traditions and customs. Living by divine right promoted prejudice against the lower class while also destroying the country and slowing humanity down. Men had forgotten morality and in place used power. In a “Vindication of the Rights of Men” by Wollstonecraft, the path to virtue is through reason. The effects of virtue are illustrated through characteristics of equal rights, submitting to God, and life experience.

One effect of becoming virtuous is living morally through equal rights. Wollstonecraft writes “ Their minds in fact, instead of being cultivated, have been so warped by education, that it may require some ages to bring the back to nature and see their true interest..“ Wollstonecraft is saying that the current system has made men unnatural through wealth, power and status, the men don’t see their effects of society and it make take forever to bring people back to unity. Wollstonecraft writes “In infancy of society, confining our view to our own country customs were established by the lawless power of an ambitious individual; “She talks about that dishonesty in politics and government, and there is so much dishonesty is because of the brute force of those in powerful positions. This shows how the wealthy/powerful are taking control and dividing the country.
