Gustave Courbet's life begins June 10, 1819, in Ornans near Besancon in France. Art started for Gustave at a young age in a little seminary at Ornans. His teacher, "Le Pere Baud" decided to take his students out to nature to draw. "This was a very audacious step at that time. Up until the period of Romanticism the landscape did not exist in its own right; it was merely the setting for mythological or other compositions." (Boudaille, Georges. Gustave Courbet (New York: graphic society Ltd. 1969), 9. ) His first works were for a childhood friend named Max Buchon, who had written a poetry booklet and needed illustrations. He then went on to study in Paris and was getting commissions for portraits. His oil painting, "The Atelier" was painted in the years 1854 and 1855. His painting was a commission offered by Nieuwerkerke, the Napoleons 3rd superintendent. …show more content…
Most people believe his work as the beginning of realist movement. The center artist is Courbet himself and a large canvas: "…places himself between the landscape he is painting and the model; she is naked -like the truth- ....to show that he is a complete painter." (Boudaille, Georges. Gustave Courbet (New York: graphic society Ltd. 1969), 65) He is the middleman between these two worlds. To his right are his friends and art lovers. We can spot Alfred Bruyas the art collector, Philosopher Proudhon, The critic Champfleury and Baudelaire is busy with a book. To his left, we can see a priest, a hunter who resembles Napoleon the third, unemployed worker and a beggar girl. We can describe them as everyday life. There are also symbols on the left bottom side that represent the traditional academic arts. The left-hand side represents poverty, misery, and suffering. The right side reflects wealth and

The painter Parmigianino, in his art piece, Madonna with the long neck, captures a fused narrative that comes from another art piece, “Vision of Saint Jerome”. The piece portrays the virgin Mary holding a young baby Christ. The piece is an oil painting that measures 7 by 4 feet, and was created between the years of 1534 through 1540. Cantigny Reading over the local historical places to visit my eyes gleamed with 8th grade memories when I ran across Cantigny. I had fond memories of Cantigny with my 8th grade friends as we eagerly climbed on the tanks to take pictures as well as when we went through the tours. Though, I couldn’t recall the significance of the place. Of course, this visit was to be connected with history somehow, but to me Cantigny was just tanks. So this summer I headed down with one of my good friends on one of the hottest days of this summer, and we both walked in with not much expectation for anything informational.…

Arthur Meighen was one of the most honed orators and accomplished debaters to speak in the House of Commons. As Cabinet Minister under Prime Minster Sir Robert Borden, his impregnable logic and reasoning gave way to the drafting of important legislation such as the 1914 Conscription act. However, while his intelligence was undeniable, Meighen lacked vital leadership qualities such as charm, compassion, luck, and ability to rally loyal supporters. Meighen’s role as Prime Minster brief and disheartening, aggregating to a total of nine months in Parliament over two occasions. On June 16, 1864, Meighen was born in Perth County, Ontario to farmers Joseph Meighen and Mary Jane Bell.…

Inspiration for the Thesis Topic At the middle of this semester, I decided to go back to the point, the Post-Impressionist period, where I started to be interested in Art history in the very beginning. Therefore, I would love to start again with Gustav Klimt, who lived around the same period, but had a distinctively different style in Austria. After talking to Professor Houghteling, I was inspired by the perspective offered by her. Since several well-known works of Gustav Klimt have been discussed widely in recent years, it might be a better choice to start from the series of painting of Maria Ria Munk. Historical Background Maria Ria Munk was a young lady who committed suicide for her lover at the age of twenty-four.…

These characteristics include visible brush strokes, color that delineates components of the work, muted and natural palettes, increased detail and precision in the foreground, limited color and detail in the background, and movement of light and shadow.
