Gurley's Case Summary

On 20th November 2014, a 28-year-old African-American man, Akai Gurley was fatally shot by Peter Liang, a 27-year-old rookie New York City Police Department officer in Brooklyn, New York City, United States.
This tragedy happened when Liang and his partner, Shaun Landau patrolling stairwells in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)’s Louis Pink Houses in East New York, Brooklyn. According to the New York Post, Gurley was unarmed when he was shot by Liang. The police commissioner Bill Bratton also admitted that the deceased is a ‘total innocent’ and called this incident as ‘an accidental discharge.’

With the help of a 911 operator, the neighbour instructed Butler on how to give CPR. Later, a responding officer, Andrae Fernandez, said he noticed “a pool of blood” next to Gurley’s body while giving him CPR in the same report.
Gurley was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.
Later, on 24th November 2014, the Post reported that Gurley’s death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. The Medical Examiner’s office said in a statement that Gurley’s death resulted in whole from actions of another person, not from natural causes like disease. However, this classification does not imply any statement about intent or culpability as the evaluation of legal implications of this classification is a function of the District Attorney and the criminal justice system.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson who has been investigating the shooting said at a press conference in Brooklyn on 5th December that he expect to present evidence regarding the shooting of Akai Gurley to a grand jury because it is important to the bottom of what happened.
