You are about to give an oral presentation for your final exam at the University of Texas in Austin. Your presentations topic is an opposition against Mexican Americans having the right to stay in America without permits. One of your classmates, Enrique, has had issues on becoming an American citizen, along with his family, and is on the verge of being deported back to his homeland of Mexico and losing everything he has. Enrique has taunted you and threatened you to back down from the opposing side or he will do something drastic. Many people agree, any kind of weapon could be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands, and allowing college students to carry a weapon increases the chance of having a weapon in the wrong hands on campus. Some might say that colleges are not crime free and the need to carry a gun is necessary for protection, but many critics would care to oppose. The truth is, more guns on campuses could actually create a higher risk of gun violence for students than if there were no guns allowed. “The fact that our nation’s colleges and universities are some of the safest places in our country in large part in large part because their, campuses, in almost all cases, have remained gun free” (Students for Gun Free Schools 633). In the essay, “ Why Our Campuses are Safer Without Concealed Handguns”, there are reasons why allowing students to bring guns would in fact increase gun violence on campuses; the presence of drugs and alcohol, the risk of suicide shootings and mentally unstable people carrying guns, gun thefts, and a significant increase in accidental shootings (Students For Gun-Free Schools 634). Unfortunately, nothing in this world is perfect, and neither is the system of handing out concealed permits to citizens. As stated in the essay, “Why Our Campuses are Safer Without Concealed Handguns", the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), a system a citizen must go through to be able to obtain their Concealed Weapon license, is deeply flawed (Students for Gun Free Schools 636). The system is missing millions of records that could disqualify citizens. “Most troubling, nine out of ten mental health records that would disqualify individuals form purchasing firearms are not currently in the database”(Students for Gun Free Schools 636).
