The National Conference of State Legislatures explains the issue of concealed weapons on campus in their article, “Guns on Campus: Overview.” In this article, the NCSL is solely factual, as it provides reasons on how concealed carry on college campuses has been becoming an issue in current times. In his article, Burnett discusses five reasons students should be encouraged to carry a concealed weapon on campus. The author jumps right into the number one most logical reason students should have their second amendment right on college campuses, the fact that law-abiding, and licensed, citizens would be the only ones that would carry on campus (Burnett). This means that the only students that would have the right to carry a concealed weapon on campus are those that have a license to do so. Therefore, the idea that any citizen could carry a weapon onto campus, without a background check, is not accurate. Some college universities allow students to carry concealed weapons onto their campus, and these same institutes have not experienced any backlash from the decision (Burnett). Burnett then explains how this results in the notion that concealed weapons have reduced crime rates in the certain states that allow concealed carry. Concealed weapons on college campuses would serve the right of protecting the carrier, and other innocent victims. Burnett adds a heart stopping statistic to the argument that, “…there are nine sexual assaults reported on college campuses each day.” If these sexual assault victims were carrying a concealed weapon, the experiences of rape trauma syndrome would not happen to them.
