Why Do Guns Kill People?

"Guns don 't kill people, people kill people." This quotation can be taken in different ways. One way this could be looked at is it 's not the guns that kill people, it 's the person behind it. The gun laws in the United States of America are pretty loose; most states do not require a permit to purchase a gun or a license to own one as well. This means that a person with serious physiological issues could walk into their local Wal-Mart and purchase a handgun with ease and use it the same day. Around ninety people die in the United States of America each day in gun related incidences which roughly equals about 32,000 deaths per year according to the Violence Policy Center (VPC). Using the total deaths in 2010 (number of deaths: 2,515,458) taken from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gun deaths account for about 1.3% of deaths each year in the United States of America; 1.3% of deaths that could have been prevented or at the very least reduced. Taking into account the total amount of deaths and laws varied in each state, the United States of America 's government should implement a nationwide law requiring …show more content…
The absence regulatory laws to buy or allow the use of a firearm and the laws on how old someone has to be to handle a weapon cause way too many unnecessary and avoidable deaths in the United States of America. The absence of a single background check could cause unimaginable grief and suffering to those who are affected. Guns are embedded in the American society; no matter how hard people try, guns will always be available in America, people will continued to be killed and people will continue to be pro gun. Just by adding this simple, reasonable regulatory federal law countless loss of life can be prevented; people can live their lives feeling safe. Are these weapons not meant for protection? Then why do people want to get rid of guns in general for their

As of today, there have been 3,269 gun related deaths in the United States and 12,818 gun related incidents. Fifty seven of those incidents were mass shootings, five hundred and forty were home invasions, and three hundred and ninety two were defensive use (Gun Violence Archive). Most guns used in shooting are stolen in some way or another and yet, we still think that taking away the ability to buy them will stop all of the gun violence. Guns are not going away; it is time to arm those able to carry, allow concealed carry on college campuses, and to realize that taking away guns will not stop the mass shootings.…

In 2014, about 42,000 Americans killed themselves and at least half of them did so with guns. This reveals how dangerous it is to just sell guns to people without at least checking their background, maybe even their financial problems to find any clue that might lead that person to use the gun for undesirable purposes. Having a more organized gun sale and control would reduce these unfortunate rates. Finally, lessening gun availability for Americans would make crime and violence less prone in the streets of the United States. Research shows that the mere presence of weapons increases aggression, in other words, having a plain and uncomplicated way to get a hold of a weapon stimulates violence.…

The push for stricter gun control, whether it be gun bans, ammunition bans, background check reforms, or the reformation of laws pertaining to firearms, is something that has been growing over the past decade. The many acts of violence committed using firearms has led many people to believe that these actions will prove beneficial to America. Many American citizens and politicians possess the “less guns equals less violence” line of thought. As simple and straight an answer this may sound , it is far from it.…

In recent years, nearly 35,000 people have been killed annually by guns in the United States. These deaths include 15,000 murders, 18,000 suicides, and 1,500 accidents. With approximately 25 Americans murdered each day due to gun violence, handing out more guns just does not seem like the right thing to do (“Progressive”). According to statistics the people of the United States already have guns and concealed carries. Guns do not kill people, people kill people, so it does not make sense that people should be given more guns. 80-90% of Americans agree that better background checks should be put into play to limit who is able to receive a murderous weapon (“Concealed…

America invests a great amount of time and money to the prevention of death and disease, putting more funds to medical and health care than to education, food, clothes, automobiles, and housing. (Harwood 128) With the exceeding number of deaths due to guns, when will America decide it’s a good idea to regulate this national disease? The government can institute laws on when, where, and what kind of guns are sold to the public without infringing the individual right. The government can also restrict who can obtain a gun in some cases and require things such as background checks, permits, and training without this infringement, according to “Gun Control Reform: Should the United..”.…

A second way to demonstrate the danger of simply access to firearms is to examine the correlation between number of guns owned and gun deaths. An article by Max Fisher and Josh Keller states that "the United States has 270 million guns and had 90 mass shooters from 1966 to 2012" and that "no other country has more than 46 million guns or 18 mass shooters". These statistics show a direct correlation between the number of guns people have access to and the amount of mass shootings and gun deaths in general. If legislation is made to simply limit access to military grade weapons or any gun in general, the evidence is clear that there would be a decrease in gun deaths. By comparing the U.S. to other countries so similar, a clear idea can be formulated about what the solution to such a high number of gun deaths and mass shootings that has currently become a crisis in…

There are too many mass shootings I find it rather disturbing that every time I turn on the news there is a mass shooting or a murder. Too many bad people have guns. Moore claims the use of guns for deadly purposes is characteristically American, and he says to the behavior of people in other nations that have guns in an attempt to prove this. According to to the Reporter, Moore said, “It’s clear that the NRA is actually half-right in their slogan, ‘Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.’ We just need to modify that to: ‘Guns don’t kill people Americans kill people.'” To bolster this claim, Moore pointed to Canadians, who have “an estimated five million hunting rifles and shotguns in their homes” yet “don’t go and shoot each other on a daily basis like we do.”…

62% of the 31,000 deaths caused by a gun are suicides (Cornell 2). According to Arthur L. Kellerman, MD, “residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience a suicide than residents of homes without guns” (A Case for Gun Control). I have experienced the effects of suicide within my own family. One month ago, my cousin Marisa committed suicide. She was 26 years old and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia a few years prior to the tragic incident.…

In America, there is a growing perception that guns are: they are harmful, they kill, and they commit crimes, and so most guns should be banned. But, how can a gun kill or commit crimes; it is not a living thing, it is a tool. With the use of guns, America has grown to be a strong and independent country throughout history. The push to ban guns will only keep guns away from law abiding citizens since criminals, by nature, do not follow laws and respect the gun free zones. The banning of guns in America should end.…

After obtaining guns, children and adults collect them and proceed to improve their accuracy in shooting, but getting rid of them would make the world a dangerous place. Many people who believe that guns are the leading cause of death in the United States, are incorrect. A gun is not a person, it has no feelings nor can it move on its own it cannot be personified nor be blamed for any of the actions. A gun must be wielded by a person and that person is the one responsible for pulling the trigger. If guns were banned and somehow a criminal couldn’t get his hand on one illegally, they can still kill.…

In fact, owning a gun can actually be more safe than not having one. It can bring a sense of security to your home knowing that you have some sort of protection. Someone who is properly trained can safely protect their house and family from anyone trying to harm them while not having to worry about any accidents happening. Everyone hears of those accidental shootings once in awhile, but how much blame can we put on guns? Car accidents happen every day but no one blames cars, so we shouldn’t blame guns.…
