Summary On January 25, 1988, Robert T., a sixth-grade student, brought a loaded revolver into the classroom of Mr. Chaddock, a language arts teacher. Mr. Chaddock asked Robert to hand him the revolver on two different occasions during the class period that day. Robert refused his request both times. Mr. Chaddock relied on instinct when he decided to continue teaching. He thought Robert would only use the weapon if he felt threatened. Somehow, toward the end on the class period, the principal found out about the weapon. She requested that Robert come down to her office. Upon his arrival, the principal demanded that Robert hand the revolver over to her. Robert refused the principal’s request and pulled the gun and held it on her.

This would allow administrators and educators to follow explicit procedures. I would have the definitions of immorality, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, and willful neglect of duty clearly defined in the simplest terms possible. This would alleviate any misunderstanding as to things educators could be dismissed for. They would have some idea of how to react to situations involving guns. Having defined rules and procedures would give them scenarios in advance that would help keep everyone as safe as possible. Being proactive, rather than reactive, would establish rules and consequences for possible offenders. Offenders couldn’t say that they weren’t aware of this. It would help in the effort of holding them legally liable for any damage, pain, and suffering that they might instigate. If the student was a minor, then parents would possibly be held liable for any damages, pain, and suffering caused by their child. This would be a great sanction that would keep parents apprised of the things their children are involved in. Too many time parents are clueless as to the things their own children are doing.
