The phone rang in the next room, “Ring! Ring!”
Samuel got up from his bed, slipped on his tattered slippers, his fuzzy robe, and walked to the kitchen. He picked up the phone to answer. He glanced at the caller ID.
“Jan,” he whispered.
He answered, “Hello.”
“Hi, Samuel!,” yelled his sister Jan.
“How are you doing?” answered Samuel.
“I’m great! I was wondering if you wanted to come up to Ottawa this week.”
“Yeah,” answered Samuel, “That would be great.”
“Alright,” answered Jan, “I’ll see you then.”
The alarm rang at 3:00 A.M the next day Samuel woke up, and once again slipped on his shredded slippers. He started to dress for the trip that day, and for relaxing he picked out a comfy tee shirt, a pair of jeans, and …show more content…
It looked very old and worn, but seemed as though Samuels only chance out. He turned the doorknob slowly, and pulled the door open as quickly as he could. There were stairs leading down to a basement. It was absolutely pitch black.
“Now would be a great time for you to work.” he said looking down at his broken phone.
He started down the stairs into the darkness. He finally met the bottom of the stairs. The air was cold, and Samuel’s hands were shaking like crazy. He felt around the walls to see where he was going. The hallways were incredibly narrow and hard to maneuver through. He felt a very large lump on the wall. He stopped at a chill he thought was there. He looked up to see two eyes and a narrow mouth wide open. Samuel screamed and tried running, but he tripped on the cracked floors.

Samuel screamed, “Stay away from me! Please!” The figure disappeared. Samuel started to stand back up. His headache came back as soon as he stood …show more content…

He turned around once more and slowly moved his hand toward the luggage. He grabbed the handle and picked it up. He scratched his head confused. He ran across the street and opened his car door. He set the luggage down to see inside. He opened the suitcase to see his clothes, shoes, car keys, and pills. There was a note on the steering wheel. It said, “Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.” It was a Japanese proverb he had studied merely a month before this. He started up the stairs to his sister’s house and knocked on the door.
His sister opened the door.
“Hey!” Jan shouted.
“Hey, how are you?” asked Samuel.
“Good,” she said, “But I want to hear about your trip.”
“It was a long strange trip.”
“Well come inside.”
Samuel turned around to see the figure that chased him in the cellar. The figure chuckled and waved as he disappeared into thin
