Politics has had a huge impact on who should be able to carry and buy weapons. Democrats believe that although they do recognize the right to own firearms, assault weapons should be banned to a certain extent as it continues to take away innocent lives. “Life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious” (On The Issues, 2012 Democratic Party Platform, September 4 2012). As the political party states here, we need to keep guns out of hands of criminals and people who are using weapons in a violent way. They also support the idea that we have to focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, and especially strengthening our background check system. However, Republicans support the exact opposite. High profile shootings worry consumers sending them straight into gun and ammunition stores making extreme sale surges. This increases the issue making more and more people in ownership of firearms. Some may argue that it’s our second amendment right, right? The argument that more law abiding citizens owning guns will stop terrorists or criminals with guns is extremely unintelligent and foolish. “States such as North Carolina have made it easier to legally purchase guns and carry them in public places.”(Moore 1). Some states are making it extremely easy for citizens to obtain guns, although background checks are being done, less than 1% of the background checked people are actually denied guns. Although gun laws enforce background checks in certified shops, gun laws don’t require that background checks are done for people buying guns through a gun show. “Most Americans live somewhere near a gun show...from Las Vegas and Philadelphia to Hickory, N.C. and Salmon, Idaho.”(Smith 1). Although background checks aren’t required at gun shows, senators in past years have actually tried to put laws that require such checks. “Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, and President Obama tried to eliminate the gun show loophole in 2013, with a bill that would have expanded background checks. But Congress didn 't pass it.”(Smith 1). Proving that not everyone wants gun laws even after such tragic events because of how much revenue such companies bring into the country. The NRA or National Rifle Association donates large sums of money to congressmen and women around the country making it a hard choice for some congresspeople to choose to enforce certain gun laws. “Since 1998, the National Rifle Association has donated $3,781,803 to current members of Congress.”(Williams 1).
