In the past year President Obama has been questioned about what he is going to do to minimize gun violence and he has come up with a plan. The President has decided that if guns are going to be obtained by someone they first must go through a series of steps to do so. According to the NewYorkTimes.com, “The actions the president announced last month represent the maximum the administration can do under the current law,” said Eric Schultz, the deputy White House press secretary, “namely increasing mental health treatment and reporting, improving public safety, managing the future of gun safety technology and, of course, enhancing the background check system.” (New York Times) By taking these precautions this is to reduce gun violence and keep guns out the hands of people that cannot handle having a gun. I look at it as a serious problem in America because it is. This year alone there have been more than 6,000 acts of gun violence and the year just begun. The Washington Post had a similar stance on this problem as I and that is that gun violence in America is out of control and as citizens of this country we need to be the ones that try to make a difference and it starts with who we elect as the president and that goes into the new gun law that President Obama wants instated. I agree that there needs to be a series of steps a person seeking to obtain a gun must go through and that includes the dealers as well. I think that it is a great idea and it keeps guns out the hands of people that do not need a gun in their possession. CNN made some valid points in reference to mental illness and gun violence and the connection they have, but I did not agree with what was said. They said the people with mental illness are more likely to harm themselves, which is true, but they also have an equal chance in harming someone else because they are not mentally stable. To summarize, I think that gun violence in America needs to minimize and it all starts with where the guns are coming from and who they are put in the hands
