The Role Of Gun Control Policies In The Washington Post

Many news sources covered gun violence and potential gun policies in the wake of the Umpqua Community College shooting in Oregon. Each news outlet that covered the issue did it in a slightly different way, and in many cases with some bias. This bias can be caused by a variety of factors, such as the outlet’s target audience, who sponsors the outlet, and even the author’s socioeconomic background. The Washington Post is one of the most well respected news sources in world on both the Internet and in print. The Post showed why it is so well respected in its October 9th article “Most gun owners support restrictions. Why aren’t their voices heard?” This article was very fair to both liberal and conservative policies by showing that not everyone …show more content…
According to the Post’s about page on their website, the paper was founded in 1877. This means that it has been in print for 138 years, which is a long time to learn how to be a neutral news source that is able to accurately report the news to the people. That is also a long time to build a solid reputation that no editor would want to have tarnished by any perceived bias. RedState is often considered to be one of the most conservatively biased website on the Internet. This was as clear as ever in their coverage of gun control policies in the aftermath of the Oregon mass shooting. With articles like “Think this Country Has a Gun Problem? Blame Obama” it is hard to deny their conservative bias. Within this article, which was published on October 9, 2015, sentences like “Barack Obama’s unprecedented disregard for the authority of Congress” show that the article is prone to hyperbole, which is a strategy commonly used in biased …show more content…
Vice’s coverage of gun control policies range everything from having very little bias at all to having a significant lean to the left. An October 12, 2015 article, “Why Focusing on Mass Shootings Won 't End Gun Violence in America” is very fair because it focuses primarily on statistics to present a balanced argument. One such statistic, which was based on a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, is that “85 percent of shootings occur within social networks, and that just 3 to 5 percent involve mentally ill shooters.” This statistic would tend to support liberal policies on gun control rather than the conservative argument that better mental health care is the answer. The article later agrees with this conservative idea though when it says “expanding access to mental health care is an important public health imperative.” Since this article shows both sides of the issue it is fair to call it non-biased, but this isn’t true for all Vice

The news site also openly increased anti-Semitic writings and racism to help President Trump win more votes among the white community. President Trump also launched a travel ban targeting the Muslims under the disguise of war on terror. Just as the war on drugs was used to discriminate against the blacks, so is the war on terror used to discriminate against the Muslims. The worse part of it is that his company was sued twice after it refused to rent houses to the black people. This proves President Trump is one among several prominent individuals who are propagating racism in the…

The opinion of the editors of Popular Mechanics Magazine is also biased because they are predominantly white. Being white makes their opinion biased because making people believe that 9/11 was the job of terrorists not the government does not negatively affect them. They do not have to suffer from the effects of Islamophobia caused by the belief that 9/11 was entirely the work of Muslim extremists, therefore it is easy for them to make that…

In Adam Gopnik’s essay “Shootings,” he shows concerned with the growth of gun violence in the United Sates, and the lack of action from the government in making strong and restrictive gun control laws to prevent further deaths and massacres by guns. Gopnik was even more concerned on how easy it is for people with a history of mental illness acquiring weapons that were only made to kill people. By comparing United States with others countries which have restrictive and tightens gun control laws, Gopnik shows how deaths by mass shooting has decreased in those countries since the government started to taking action, and they never had to experience the same incident as severe as the first one. The main purpose of the Gopnik essay is to persuade…

Thomas’ article was published in the Salt Lake Tribune and Cohen’s article was printed in the Washington Post, which is practically on the opposite side of the nation. Both are pretty liberal papers. You wouldn’t think that the Salt Lake Tribune would be such a liberal paper since it is in the conservative state of Utah. In the past few years it has even become more liberal causing it to lose readers. You would expect the Washington Post to be a liberal paper.…

The article that I chose to analyze is “After Sandy Hook, we’ll never be silent on guns again”, by Shannon Watts from CNN. When I look at this article, I can easily find the target audience in this article. The target audience is American moms. Since Watts delivers the message that Moms have to be banding together to alter the American culture of gun violence in this article, the target audience can be defined as moms in the U.S.…

First of all, a newspaper can write a story however they would like. If a newspaper shows bias, they will most likely publish stories that share or support their viewpoints. For example, if a newspaper considers the fact that the Pullman Strike was all the fault of the company, they may word a story as the company cut wages for workers already working in poor conditions. However, a newspaper blaming the workers may say workers undergo a strike, causing the company to shut down. Nevertheless, each of the newspapers may be correct, but they don't show the other half of the story since it does not support their…

This is very unusual when one remembers that Breitbart is owned by a white supremacist, and is generally tailored towards the alt-right. To those who already read Breitbart, this is generally what they expect, as the article is still biased towards their views. The opposing side also had little to complain over, as the article was much closer to their views than the average Breitbart article. In this instance, Breitbart took the best path they could.…

In “Confessions of a Liberal Gun Owner”, author James Cronin explains why he, despite being a liberal, believes in and exercises his gun ownership rights. This essay, in particular, is quite intriguing due to the fact a liberal is supporting the second amendment. The title alone draws in a diverse crowd because it is somewhat paradoxical in today's divided political spectrum. The personal crisis that leads to the author’s support of gun ownership enlightens and resonates with nearly all readers. In “Confessions of a Liberal Gun Owner”, Cronin successfully presents a persuasive argument for firearms that is convincing to both liberals and conservatives alike.…
