Do we have the right to bear arms? Gun violence in the United States continues to increase due to citizens being able to personally purchase guns. Different states obtain different laws. Some state laws necessitate citizens to acquire a permit. Other state laws are more lenient and do not require citizens to receive a permit before purchasing a gun. Some state laws are in between. For an example, according to the Institute for Legislative Action, New York State law does not permit rifles and shotguns to be purchased (with a permit), registered, or carried. Though, handguns could be purchased, registered, and carried.

The NY times claims that this “appears to be the deadliest shooting rampage in American history”(Hauser and O’connor, 2007). The article states that, this shooting massacre occurred on April 16, 2007. On this day Seung Hui Cho, who was mentally ill, shot and killed thirty-three of the students that attended Virginia Tech University. The shooter also shot himself, according to the article. The shooting was said to have changed a lot. ABC news states, “In the year following the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, Congress passed and President George W. Bush signed the first major change to U.S. gun laws in more than a decade. The law expanded the federal background check database to include an estimated 2 million more people, particularly felons and the mentally ill”(Bingham, 2012). This might seem in the step in the right direction but thirty-three individuals passed from this shooting. How much must occur until all guns are banned?
Time goes on and more shootings occur. On July 20, 2012 James Holmes entered a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado (Jezebel, 2015). Holmes killed twelve people and injured 58 others by shooting them. In a CNN article, Holmes is said to have purchased the guns legally in a store in the Denver area (Oates, 2012).
