The city of Chicago has faced controversy for quite for time. Many claim the city has become so corrupt, that the trail leads all the way up to the city’s mayor, Rahm Emmanuel. Corruption is one of the major problems Chicago faces and Mayor Rahm Emanuel is the face of the corruption that plagues the city. In an article written by Judith Valente, Can Chicago offer a path away from gun violence? She states “More than 2,800 people were shot in Chicago last year, and by December 2015 there had been 417 gun homicides, up almost 20 percent from the previous year.” (Valente) As the country faces mass violence from gangs, a growing problem is the police brutality and the unjustified shootings of unarmed people. A case of severe police brutality, which has ultimately led to the arrest of a Chicago police officer with a charge for murder. In an article by NBC “In the dash-cam video, which a judge ordered police to release by Nov. 25, Laquan McDonald first appears about 5 minutes, 16 seconds in, and is seen walking down a street. The teen, who police say was armed with a knife, walks diagonally across the street, away from police officers at the scene. Seconds later, an officer opens fire, and McDonald falls to the ground. At that point, the officer who fired is no longer in view, but McDonald 's body appears to jerk repeatedly from additional gunshots.” In another article there are claims that police officers visited the nearby Burger King and deleted the video claimed by the manager. It is speculated that Rahm and his office knew about the video in December of the same year and was keep under wraps until after the election for mayor. The family of the victim were not able to view the footage of their loved ones murder, yet they were paid 5 million dollars without having to file a lawsuit. The family was only able to see the video once a judge ordered its release, yet the payout came before the debut of the video proving the city knew how irrefutable the evidence was. Almost every reputable news outlet and city resident has been demand the mayor’s resignation. Since he first took office, the tensions between gangs and police have become more strained and do not seem to be getting better in the foreseeable future. “If Emanuel doesn’t resign, a recall effort may do the job for him: Less than 90,000 voter signatures are needed to recall the mayor under legislation that was just introduced in the Illinois General Assembly by a representative from Chicago. But Emanuel should spare everyone’s time and start the healing process in the city by stepping down now.” (Nation) Although Rahm is smart enough to not leave evidence for the implication of corruption, the city now has a full perspective of the criminal that is in office. Rahm has reluctantly allowed an investigation by the Department of Justice into the Laquan McDonald case. It’s unlikely that anything implicating other officers or Rahm will be discovered but Chicagoans should remain optimistic. In another case a city lawyer was said to have concealed a critical piece of evidence in another shooting of a black male by police.
