Is the American population carrying weapons going to deter delinquency? Many people these days focus on the fact that throughout the years, people who have committed mass shootings – similar to one of the most recent in Las Vegas, when a man opened fire on a crowd of at least 20,000 people at a concert, killing 58 people and injuring around 500 of them – had anything to do with just the fact of owning a gun. For this reason, mass shootings give rise to debates about whether legislatures should be stricter when it comes to obtaining a weapon, making society doubt if people with guns are really going to own one for safety.
Even though mass shootings seem to be our biggest problem with gun ownership, on average, mass shootings report for less than 1% of the U.S homicide rate and are remarkably difficult to stop via firearm control laws. There are more homicides every day than mass shootings. Therefore, it is essential to be aware that mass shootings should not be the main focus in the debate for gun regulations.
