Gun Ownership

A common activity in the South is hunting, and consequently, gun ownership is pervasive, meaning it is spread widely throughout the South. In Georgia anyone eighteen or older can own a handgun. There are many other instances where owning guns is legal as a minor, such as hunting or fishing, or if there is parental consent to maintain such possession. Anyone in Georgia can carry the weapons on them as long as they are openly visible and not concealed. Conceal and carry is only permitted for those twenty-one years of age and older who have undergone training and have a permit. On the morning of December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, a twenty-year-old, shot and killed twenty first graders and six faculty/staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School before turning his own gun on himself. A new report was released a little less than a year after the shooting, stating that Adam Lanza was suffering from a serious mental illness. This being said, there are still not many clues explaining Lanza’s actions. Through many interviews and other evidence, it is believed he carefully planned out his actions which included killing himself, but why he did it, or why he selected Sandy Hook Elementary School as his target, is still undetermined. On the morning of the shooting, Adam Lanza made his way into Sandy Hook Elementary school. He was carrying more than thirty pounds of weapons and ammunition and killed the principal, Dawn Hochsprung, and the school psychologist, Mary Sherlach. He then entered two different classrooms and killed twenty children and their teachers with a Bushmaster rifle. In the past, Lanza had struggled with mental illness with a history of obsessive-compulsive behaviors and a fascination with mass shootings. He was especially interested in the 1999 Columbine Columbia school shootings. Even with all of this, none of the mental health specialists he had met with predicted Lanza was capable of such violent actions. He had seen …show more content…
He also would not participate in the behavior therapies that were suggested. Lanza disliked crowds and loud noises, and was very particular about his food. He also disliked his mom’s cat so much that he forced her to give it away. He also hated birthdays, Christmas, and holidays. Because of these ticks, Nancy Lanza, his mother, quit her job to be with him full time. Before the shooting, Nancy had left her son home alone as she traveled to New Hampshire. Earlier in the month before the shooting, Adam Lanza’s mother had been concerned for him as he was spending nearly all of his time in his home (Canton). This is just one case where many red flags were raised, but still, tragically, the shootings occurred and many lives were lost. This Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting is one of the three deadliest American school shootings. The other two happened at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School. In the Sandy Hook shooting, Adam Lanza obviously had some form of mental illness. Seung-Hui Cho, the shooter at Virginia Tech, was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder and received therapy and special education support for this throughout his junior year in high school. He stalked two female students
