I’ve always believe having firearms on college campus will have more negative effects that outweigh the positives. By having firearms on campus we are at risk at having another University of Austin or Virginia Tech incident. Supporters of the open carry argue that in the case of an active shooter on campus the students and faculty armed with a permit to carry a handgun can protect the lives of many. Which is true to an extent, but many shooters are normally not only armed with assault weapons but also an array of mental issues and internal problems. In the view of this, I’ve started my research on the topic question of does having armed students and faculty make the campus safer? My research came with the following:

The article talks about past events such as Columbine High School and University of Austin Tower shooting, where great arguments were made about campus carry. Katherine throws light upon about what could possibly happen if students are allowed to carry arms. The researcher bring up points from both sides, for example the University of Austin shooter was slowed down by armed individuals who opened fire at the shooter which allowed the cops to deal with the shooter and protected lives. On the other hand, Katherine talks about Columbine, and how the shooter were able to require the weapons used for the deadly massacre. Supports of the bill “still believe that it is very important that we do all that is necessary and proper to strengthen our constitutional protections.” The article continue to show the view point those of supports of the bills by using the example of states such as Utah, Iowa and Indiana who have passed open carry laws with permit requirements. On the other hand, the writer flips the script with the view point of ones who rather veto the bill of open carry in the state of Georgia. “…the measure would make it harder for campus police to protect the community” says University of Georgia president.
