A lot of these were short lived or not taken very seriously. For example, the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which banned semiautomatic assault weapons was passed in 1994 but then ten years later expired("Federal Gun Control Legislation - Timeline"). This ban expired a mere 3 years before the Virginia Tech shooting had this ban still been in effect it could of prevented this massacre other recent events alike. Both firearms used in the attacks that day were semiautomatic and had this ban still been in affect it very well could have prevented the shooter from buying these weapons so easily (Williams and Morrison . . . found ).I 'm not saying the government should go around knocking on doors and taking every bodies guns away. But we can make not only purchasing the weapons harder, But also the licensing process. Anyone can sit at home on their computer and file for a weapons permit. The problem with this is where handing out permits and licensee 's to just anyone who clears a background check, But just because whoever 's on the other end of that computer cleared the background check doesn’t mean they 're a good or stable person. I feel that anyone who wishes to obtain a permit or licenses should have to do so through both the ATF and the local police department.
