Gun Hill Road Film Analysis

Gun Hill Road, directed by Rashaad Ernesto Green, tells the story of a broken Hispanic family. The film centers on the gender, sexuality and race backgrounds of each of the members in the family. The viewers see the struggles the family faces during the time when the father, Enrique returns home and sees his son transform into someone the father believes to be the “wrong person”. Enrique is so against his son, Michael, being a trans sexual. It should not matter what Michael identifies as, as long as he is happy Michael is a trans sexual teenager who also goes by the name of Vanessa. Since the teen’s father has been absent for most of his life, Michael never had known what it meant to have his real dad there to talk to. Instead, Michael had his mother’s boyfriend, (insert name here), who ended up being a better father figure then Enrique because he knew what Michael was going through and accepted who Michael wanted to be. Michael will transform into Vanessa and will feel as if he is truly a female. In John Berger Ways of Seeing, Berger shows the reader the different views and opinions people had when it came to viewing nude paintings of women during the Renaissance. One of those views was, “But a further element is now added. The element of judgement.” (Berger) From reading this, Berger was stating that people judged women who modeled for these paintings because this was considered pornography and it was giving another way for people to view these women in a negative way. In the film, Vanessa is viewed as a female to most people, but not to her family. This impacts Michael/Vanessa in a negative way because all she wants to be is accepted into her own family and for her own family to love who she is and who she wants to become instead of hiding who she really
