Right to Carry and Protect The United States has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the developed world. There are not many countries in the world where an adult can walk into a store and walk out with a firearm and bullets to match. Gun ownership has become increasingly popular as crime and outdoor recreation have become more prevalent in American society. Whether or not a person truly needs a gun to protect himself remains the question with many lawmakers. Many pro-gun lobbyists, though, use the second amendment as a shield to deflect anti-gun laws they deem unconstitutional in order to keep firearms legal in the Free World. Alan M. Ruben, a physician in Wheeling, West Virginia, states, “More guns just mean more gun crime and deaths. After all, firearm injuries are the second leading cause of injury death in the United States, and the rate of gun-related deaths among US children under the age of fifteen is nearly twelve times higher than that among children in twenty-five other industrialized nations combined” (Ruben). Gun violence has gained a lot of attention from the public eye because of the increase in mass shootings. “Furthermore, there is no credible evidence that permitting citizens to carry concealed firearms reduces crime” (Ruben). Outlawing a civilian’s ability to carry a weapon in public seems like a simple solution to ending gun violence; However, some pro-gun advocates state that concealed carry owners can reduce gun related violence by stopping mass shootings. “Anti-gun advocates often exaggerate the risks of mass shoot-outs or accidental killings. But, in fact, concealed-carry permit holders have better safety records than police officers, and more criminals are killed by citizens defending themselves than are killed by law enforcement” asserts David M. Criminals and civilians both carrying weapons would result in more deadly shootings. Alex Seitz-Wald, a political correspondent for the National Journal, asserts, “Researchers at Johns Hopkins University recently conducted a review of all the existing academic literature on right-to-carry [RTC] and found: "The most consistent finding across studies which correct for these flaws is that RTC laws are associated with an increase in aggravated assaults,”.” An increase in guns for civilians would have a direct effect on guns in the hands of criminals.
