What Is The Role Of Mass Shootings In The United States

“There are hundreds of millions of gun owners in this country, and not one of them will have an accident today. The only misuse of guns comes in environments where there are drugs, alcohol, bad parents, and undisciplined children. Period” (Ted Nugent). This quote reflects on the recent mass shootings where firearms were unfortunately placed in the wrong hands. As of December 6, 2015, 355 mass shootings have occurred in the United States. Following every shooting is the devastation and surprise of our country. However, there has yet to be any action to eliminate these tragic events. Owning firearms is an important right that Americans have and should not be violated. Has there been an increase in gun violence over the years? Yes; but that violence is not coming from registered gun owners- it is coming from firearms on the black market and insufficient federal background checks, which leads to mentally unstable people easily getting their hands on a firearm. However, in Connecticut, the gun violence rate dropped 40% after putting a law into place that had the following requirements: Apply for a permit with the local police, be 21 years old, and complete at least 8 hours of safety training. Mass shootings are popping up left and right and while the number of deaths are still being counted, the murderer’s name is plastered on everything from newspapers to social media accounts. We as a country continue to fail by advertising this criminal as a celebrity by giving him/her the satisfaction of being known and having our undivided attention. We can all agree that the majority of these suspects should have never had access to these firearms to begin with but the reality is that they were able to get these guns all too
