Gun Control Since the formation of this great country there has been a constant struggle between the right to own firearms. At times one side has the upper hand, then at other times the other side is in control. The Democratic side has been trying to go against the Constitution since the beginning of the fight. In recent times the Republicans and the National Rifle Association have fought greatly to keep this country the way the founding fathers intended for it to be. Currently, in 2015, the battle has calmed down significantly. In January of 2013, President Obama was pushing a range of gun-control measures. They succeeded on a ban in 1994. In the years since the ban was lifted, based on the U.S. Department of Defense, murders declined 43%, violent crime 43%, rapes 27%, and robberies by 49%. Even though it was proven to be ineffective in any way the Democrats still wanted to push for even stricter gun laws. A main thing that was controlling the fight for the right to keep and bare arms was the highly biased media. The media kept on reporting on false facts that swayed the people but really almost all the information being reported was twisted around and inaccurate. The true statistics was that Nationally; “assault weapons” were used in 1.4% of crimes involving firearms. It is a proven fact that in areas of high crime rates there was greater support for gun control(“Gun Control Does Not Reduce Gun Violence”). Many gun companies were being sued , such as Beretta, by families that had a member die because of their firearm. People were blaming guns for killing people when is was the persons fault. Anne Kimball stated,” You don’t sue GM when someone drives drunk and hurts someone” (“Introduction to Gun Control”). Luckily, Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act in 2005.
