Unfortunately, one of the most heated debates that have encapsulated our political discussion is gun control. Since Sandy Hook in November 2012, there have been over 1600 mass shootings within the United States, which claimed about 1,800 casualties and over 4600 wounded. The United States is the only country in which mass shootings occur frequently. In order to combat this epidemic and enhance our lax gun control policy, I would like to explain how Representative David Cicilline’s legislation on gun control could quite possibly navigate its way through our intricate legislative process and possible roadblocks for this bill on its arduous journey to becoming a law. …show more content…
Within the House, legislation is either given to the clerk or placed in the hopper, conversely within the Senate, members must have been granted the ability to speak before introducing the bill. From here the bill is then referred to one of the various committees by either the Speaker of the House or the Presiding officer within the Senate. It is important to note that this bill can be distributed among multiple committees. Furthermore, it can have individual sections reviewed by different committees as well.After this, the Bill must have a hearing, and this is when a committee discusses the pros and cons of the proposed legislation. Subsequently, a markup session is held; during this time, members of the congressional committee have the ability to go line by line and offer any amendment they see fit.If a bill is able to make it this far, it has successfully been able to navigate its way through the Chambers Committee
