The gun law regulation in the United States is a long-standing debate in which policymakers are trying to make it harder for people to obtain a weapon and the ammunition. The recent protests and an increasing number of death cases caused by the misuse of guns to kill themselves or harming other like the recent cases regarding the mass shooting in Florida which left seventeen people dead and the sandy hook elementary shooting which left twenty-six people dead (Shermer). These events have led Congress to create stricter laws as the current laws have a flaw which people can exploit. The first evidence that can be used to back up the claim is the article regarding Australia’s gun control laws and the correlation between the rates caused by gun use. In the article called evaluated the different part of gun ownership and whether or not these laws would reduce homicide rates in Australia. The results were inclusive; however, they mention how gun ownership and suicide cases were connected. Having a sense of protection is what led this country to allow to its citizens the right to bear arms (this is a reference to the 2nd amendment rights.) In the article called Tighter Gun Control, the author talked about the president proposal to reduce gun violence. These proposals would increase our safety as the number of occurrences increases in the United States. The first proposal noted by the former president Obama was expanding the database and background check to for the mental health of potential gun owners. Another loophole that was mentioned the federal law does not apply to the private gun seller which is a big problem that needs to be solved in order to increase our protection. The second loophole that the current gun laws have is the waiting time which permits people to obtain weapons without the personal background investigation. In the article called “What we can do to stop it”, they provide steps to reduce gun violence which is of the safety concern that can be addressed by these stricter gun control laws. One step that lawmaker can take is certain restrictions put in place to prevent a select individual from obtaining a gun if they show any sign of motivated violence.
