In Octavia Butler’s novel, Parable the Sower, she suggests that guns are necessary for protection. When Lauren’s community burns down, one of the first things she gets from her house is a gun, because she knows it is a necessity to have it outside. She knows of the importance of guns and how they protect you because her father took the community kids 15 years and older for shooting practice.
