Gun control can be defined as, “any action taken by the federal government or by state or local governments to regulate, through legislation, the sale, purchase, safety, and use of handguns and other types of firearms by individual citizens” (Lee). America has internally debated the issue of gun control for over a century. It continues to be an important and pressing issue today in the United States. There are no set standards for gun control. Each state varies in its laws. The National Rifle Association promotes the “right-to-carry” laws, which means people have the right to carry a concealed handgun in public. Mark Gius is an economist at Quinnipiac University who found that limiting people’s right to carry increases a state’s homicide rate by 10 percent (Rosen). There are many who call for stricter gun control measures and laws. They claim that the majority of crimes and suicides involve guns. Of all the homicides in the United States 60 percent are gun related. As it is known in generally all parts of America, Republicans are prone to lean towards the opposition of stricter gun control. Democrats are more firmly rooted in the idea of strict gun control. Republicans support the protection of the second amendment of the constitution. Democrats believe that even that is subject to reasonable regulations (“Republican”). The excerpt “right to bear arms” is easily interpreted in many ways. A person could say that it means that Americans have the right to own guns at their leisure, which is more where the Republicans and Conservatives stand. The Democrats, however, believe that the right to bear arms does not constitute the right to gun ownership. Many Democrats believe that a person does not need a firearm exclusively to protect themselves. The Democratic party holds the idea that with more gun control comes less gun violence. Republicans and those on the side of the National Rifle Association side with the concept of more guns, more protection against gun violence (“Republican”). The legal measures each party desires to take in attempt to solve the issue contrast in almost all ways. Republicans want to loosen gun laws and keep the ban off “assault weapons”.
