Innocent people are scared because they never know what the person with the gun is going to do with it. Over time guns have rarely been used for self-defense. They are used to commit crimes and kill innocent civilians because of what that person is feeling inside or at that moment in time. For example, mass shootings, killing someone to get away with a crime, etc. As 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between the years 2007 and 2011, only 0.79% or 235,700 protected themselves with a threat to use a firearm. This shows us that most of guns are used for unnecessary things. Another thing is that enforcing gun control laws would reduce the societal costs associated with gun violence. In 2010, gun violence cost each person in the U.S. $564 and the government $5.5 billion lost in tax revenue. $133 million for law enforcement and medic response to shooting injuries. 36,341 emergency room visits and 25,024 hospitalization from gun injuries added up to an estimated $6.3 million.
