Gun control remains to be one of the most popular debates along with abortion, animal testing, and climate change. What makes gun control so controversial? Well, many people have different views on the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which reads as “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Advocates for gun control believe this applies only to police and military, but will gun control actually help reduce crime. I chose to believe that stricter gun laws will not be of help, since countries and states who already have done so have seen little to no difference in crime, criminals will not be affected and still get their hands on …show more content…
Well, looking back at Chicago, between the years 2001 and March 2012, according to nytimes “The Chicago Police Department traced the origins of about 50,000 guns that it recovered between 2001 and March 2012. More than half of those guns came from outside the state”, so even with Chicago having the most restrictive gun laws in the country, with gun shops banned and no civilian gun ranges criminals still found a way obtain the weapons they want, along with the “ban on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines” (nytimes). Many believe the amendment is intended for ordinary home defense, but I believe that is not the case. The second amendment intent is protecting and guarantee that the nation will never be overcome by any military power, foreign or domestic. A good example of where civilians result in them having to protect themselves is given by listverse, “If the five branches of the US military were beaten by, say, a nuclear holocaust, the only national defense left would be the civilians themselves. Any subsequent military invasion—probably armed with AK-47 variants—would find it very easy to overrun civilians armed only with lever, bolt, and pump action weapons.” Now I know that all five branches of the United states military being beaten seems very far fetched, but something similar very similar to being attacked is
