The tragedy sparked up a debate about gun control, and survivors of the shooting criticized Federal and State into create stricter gun laws. The National Rifle Association however, believes that arming teachers would be a better and more effective solution compared to gun control.
Several rallies, protests, and marches were held to gain Federal attention and Legislative action. One of the protests included a National School Walkout organized by the Women's March Network, held one month after the incident. The intent of the walkout was to have Congress take legislative action towards gun control and regulation. This was proven to be successful, shown in the changes done to the State of Florida’s Law and Federal Law. Florida passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act Bill on the 9th of March, which restricts people under the age of 21 and people with behavioral issues or a violent past, from purchasing firearms. It also introduced a $400 million investment to keep students safe, along with enhancing mental health treatment. Federal Law now added the STOP school violence act into the Consolidated Appropriations Act of
