Currently, in the United States there are laws on guns in some states, but not very many. Federal law also blocks the sale of guns to people found guilty of unlawful possession of firearms within the past year (Phillips). The purchase of semi-automatic weapons is legal in most U.S. states, as are automatic rifles made before 1986. The amendment to the 1986 gun control act- known as the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 requires a background check before the purchase of firearms can occur (Phillips). The minimum age able to purchase firearms is 18; although, some states are debating raising the age to 21 (SP1a). Fugitives (people deemed a danger to society, patients involuntarily, or voluntarily committed to mental institutions) are those who cannot purchase firearms (SP3a) (Phillips). Although people believe gun control will lessen violence, stronger gun laws will not help because criminals will find a way around any laws.
