Statistics show that from 2016 to now, there has been thirty-six school shootings, all which have at least injured one, due to a firearm. In the “Timeline of School Shootings from 2016 to Present Day”, one incident was the Parkland Shooting: “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting: A 19-year old former student whose behavior had led to discipline issues, began shooting students and staff members with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after activating a fire alarm. 17 people were killed, and 14 others were injured…” (3). A semi-automatic gun is listed as an assault weapon, allowing it to fire multiple rounds without human intervention. In this shooting, the gun was specifically the AR-15, which happens to also be the weapon used in another crucial shooting - Sandy Hook - where twenty-seven lost their lives. This military style weapon is typically easy to acquire because there is no waiting period for it in Florida.
