Gun control is a highly debated topic in the United States. For Americans, the 2nd Amendment “the right to bear arms” should be followed and not to be messed with. There has been 45 mass shootings in this year alone and the amount of active shootings has increased tremendously since 2001. This leads people to ask the question, should we have stricter gun controls laws here in the United States? More Americans seem to believe that more guns will solve all of the violence. According to the 2014 Pew Research Poll, 58% of Americans think that more guns will prevent crime, that percentage is 9% more than it was in 2012 (Phillips). It is not easy to to make this a law when groups such as the National Rifle Association are making it even harder. The powerful group and their supporters are one of the reasons why a post-Newton universal background check bill did not pass in Congress (Phillips). Charleston shooter, Dylann Roof passed a background check even though he had a past criminal record and the Lafayette shooter John Russell Houser passed his even though he had a mental illness(Phillips). Lawmakers also continue to favor in gun supporters, by passing laws that widen gun rights instead of restricting them, even though data shows that states with stricter laws have less crime and violence (Childress). But gun advocate groups have also made a huge statement with background checks, an advocate group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America accomplished something huge in Washington state, where they got they got 60% of the vote for expanding background checks to gun owners and they have pushed laws that would prohibit people convicted of domestic violence from having firearms in six different states, including California
